The story was subsequently published in the British magazine Magasin des enfants in 1756 without credit to de Villeneuve, giving rise to much conjecture about the author of the story. The origin of this tale can be traced back to 1740 when de Villeneuve wrote the story titled La Belle et la Bête in French.
