I also wasn’t a big fan of how wlw relationships were portrayed here considering the plot progression and twists. There were a few bumps along the way in terms of cringe conversations and a terrible use of Nazis in a character backstory. I also appreciated that, in terms of plot, Julia Bartz really wasn’t afraid to go all out lol This veered into unbelievable drama territory, but in a way that very much worked for me and I didn’t mind at all because it was so! damn fun. Julia Bartz is a Brooklyn-based writer and practicing therapist. She was an unreliable narrator I could get behind and it was pretty fun to experience all of this from her perspective. The writing style did bother me a tiny bit at the beginning, but I quickly immersed myself in Alex’s perspective.
Some books just need to entertain us and this one sure as hell did that for me. I don’t know why y’all disliked The Writing Retreat? Because it was bonkers good fun! A train-wreck I couldn’t look away from. Alex must confront her own demons – and finish her novel – to save herself.
